Free Trade Zone and Free Port of Karimun is established based on Government Regulation of Republic of Indonesia No. 48 Year 2007 amended to Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 40 of 2017 regarding the implementation of Free Trade Zone and Free Port in Several regional Of Karimun island and the entire of Karimun Anak island. Total of the area is9.666,18 hectares. Itis located strategically at Malacca Straits, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world and close to neigboring countries Singapore and Malaysia.
Karimun Free Trade Zone offers plentiful investment opportunities such as maritime, oil and gas, manufacturing, tourism industries and also trading and sevices to both local and international businessmen with full support from the Karimun Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority and the regional governments. the existing investors are also given special incentive and facilities related to customs, taxation, immigration, manpower and banking; particularly for their new investment in Karimun Free Trade Zone which are already welcoming more foreign investments.
Karimun island had only one shipyard : PT. Karimun Sembawang Shipyard originally from Singapore and several granite mining companies few years ago. At the present after gaining the status as one of free trade zones in Riau Islands Province, many investors come to do the business like PT. Saipem Indonesia from Italy, PT. Oil Terminal Karimun from Germany, PT. Grace Rich Marine from PR China. Meanwhile. PT. Karimun Marine Shipyard, PT. Multi Ocean Shipyard. PT. Karimun Power Plant from Indonesia ant other 207 registered companies in Karimun Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority in 2018.
